After graduating from the Medical Assistant program at Prism Career Institute, you’ll soon realize that there are many different career tracks you can head down – one of which is a medical group. By definition, medical groups are partnerships, associations or other groups made up of physicians that provide health services, whether specialty or multi-specialty. If you’re seeking employment in a medical group, here are a few tasks and responsibilities you can expect to perform on a regular basis.
Administrative Duties
Oftentimes, medical assistants working in small and large medical groups will perform a variety of administrative tasks. You may be asked to answer phones, greet patients, manage patient medical records, fill out insurance forms, schedule appointments and more. You might also be responsible for coordinating patient flow, such as notifying the physician of the patient’s arrival, staying alert to delays and communicating with both patients and staff. These administrative duties are essential to the day-to-day functioning of a medical group.
Clinical Duties
When not working in the reception area of a doctor’s office, you may be tasked with clinical duties. Typically, you’ll work by the physician’s side. You may be responsible for taking medical histories, preparing patients for the examination, performing basic lab tests, informing patients of treatments, medications and diets, administering certain tests and drawing blood. You might also be asked to transmit prescription refills to the patient’s pharmacy, as well as assist the physician during the exam.
Become a Medical Assistant
Medical assistants are invaluable members of medical groups, because they act as liaisons between physicians and patients. That’s why it’s important for medical assistants to have excellent customer service and communication skills, be compassionate and understanding and have the ability to multitask effectively.
