National Nurses Week is celebrated annually across the country. This recognition has taken a new meaning during the COVID-19 pandemic and, most especially, in Philadelphia, PA, for us here at Prism Career Institute. This year, we had the opportunity to be recognized by our city as an educational institution that’s contributed to the health and wellbeing of patients throughout the pandemic and beyond. While COVID-19 has made celebrating together a little more difficult, it’s important now more than ever that we recognize the dedication and care provided by healthcare workers in this field.
History of National Nurses Week
Each year, National Nurses Week begins on May 6 and ends on May 12, fittingly Florence Nightingale’s birthday who’s known as the founder of modern nursing. While the practice of celebrating nurses at different points during the year began long before this time, it was in 1982 that President Ronald Reagan signed the official proclamation designating National Recognition Day for Nurses as May 6. Over a decade later, the American Nurses Association (ANA) Board of Directors permanently expanded this recognition into a week-long celebration that takes place on the dates we hold today.
Honoring Nurses in Philadelphia after COVID-19
In 2021, National Nurses Week took on special meaning after over a year spent facing the many challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. We had the great honor of being recognized by Mayor James Kenney and our beloved city as an institution that’s developed Practical Nurses in Pennsylvania for the last 14 years:
“Prism provides access to the nursing profession to a diverse student body who may not have had the ability to pursue higher education through the traditional format. In 2020, Prism produced 125 Practical Nurses to join the workforce during a time where the need for frontline healthcare workers is at an all-time high. The mission of Prism Career Institute is to empower students with skill-based training which will allow them to pursue entry-level employment in practical nursing and healthcare fields.” – Mayor James Kenney
We’re proud to be recognized during the 2021 celebration of National Nurses Week and extend our gratitude to Mayor Kenney and the great city of Philadelphia.
