With the comprehensive training you’ve received during your studies, your externship experience, and a satisfactory score on your state licensure exam, you’re ready to seek a job as a practical nurse (PN). In addition to your knowledge and experience, however, you need to make a good impression on future employers and communicate to them why you’re a good choice for their organization. Here, Prism Career Institute shares dos and don’ts to help you succeed in your PN job interview and launch your new career.
What to Do
To make a great first impression during the interview process, try these tips:
Arrive on Time
Being prompt and arriving on time sets the tone and gives you a professional and prepared appearance. You should always plan ahead and make sure you know how long it will take you to get to the interview location. It is better to leave early to account for possible traffic or having to find the right office when you arrive. Arriving early also shows the employer they can count on you to be punctual and dependable.
Dress Professionally
The way you dress says a lot about you. Although this job is in the medical field, you should avoid scrubs and instead wear business casual or professional clothes for your interview.
Be Prepared
Being prepared for your interview is a major ‘do’ to impress your potential employer. Preparation shows you’re serious about the job and, if hired, translates to you bringing the same sense of preparation to your work. A few ways to be well-prepared for an interview include:
- Reviewing the job description and comparing your education and experience to the requirements
- Researching common PN job interview questions and prepping possible answers
- Rehearsing with a friend to feel more confident
- Bringing a copy of your resume, plus a pen and notepad to take notes
Ask Questions
Most interviewers will leave time at the end for you to ask questions, so you should have a list ready. This shows potential employers that you are truly interested in the position. Some possible questions to ask include:
- What is the company culture like?
- Will I receive any type of training?
- What is your favorite part of the job?
What Not to Do
It is also important to note there are a few things you should not do during your PN job interview. Some of these are obvious, such as not exaggerating your experience or skill level, asking inappropriate questions, or dressing and acting too casually. Others may be easily forgotten due to nerves, such as not thanking the interviewers or following up with the company in the coming days. Our Career Services Department is standing by to help students refine their interviewing habits to ensure “don’ts” like these will not prevent them from landing the PN position they deserve.
